A look at sustainability

A constant and long-term commitment for a future based on sustainability. LEMA, always sensitive to environmental issues, with a view to continuous improvement and in compliance with current regulations, pays great attention to production and disposal processes, the choice of materials, and employee well-being.

Raw materials and finishes

1

Wood

LEMA uses CARB2 certified low-formaldehyde panels for its furniture.
2

Paints

LEMA has optimized the painting process by eliminating a solvent-based system and introducing the use of water-based paints for 50% of its production. This new system saves 30,000 kw/year of energy, avoiding the emission of about 7,650 kg/year of CO2. Experimentation in the field of painting continues: LEMA is testing the use of bio paints, with the aim of switching exclusively to this material in the near future.
1

Microflock

LEMA makes the padding of its latest collections with Microflock, a polyester microfiber designed to mimic the characteristics of goose down. The minimal thickness of the fiber allows free air circulation ensuring maximum breathability. Equipped with good elastic recovery, it guarantees long-lasting durability. Microflock is a sustainable product, its fiber comes from recycled bottles and PET, GRS (Global Recycle Standard) certified.
4

Feather

LEMA uses goose and/or duck feathers and down subjected to regular hygienic-sanitary treatment. The complex production chain adheres to various associations that protect the consumer with respect for animals, traceability, and transparency of the supply chain itself.
2

Fabrics

70% of the collection is made mainly from natural fibers such as jute, viscose, cotton, wool, and linen, and 25% of the fabrics are made exclusively from natural raw materials. Caring for the environment also means making longer-lasting products: the catalog also includes fabrics with a very high wear resistance index (>40,000 martindale).
5

Polypropylene

The new plastic seats are made of PP – polypropylene, a completely recyclable material.
6

Leather

All leathers from the Basic, Top, and Super collections are made with a low environmental impact process, thus with reduced use of polluting chemical substances. For LEMA it is important to respect the sensitivity of each customer, which is why it has also introduced a selection of synthetic leather in its range.
7

Stoneware

Stoneware, used for making table tops, is composed of materials of natural origin, such as clay and sand, with decorations and textures made using water-based colors.
8

Integrated Light

The integrated light in LEMA systems offers excellent performance with respect for the environment: it falls within the new and stricter “C” and “D” 2022 classification of the new European ErP-Ecodesign regulations, aimed at encouraging the use of highly efficient light sources, therefore more performing and with lower consumption.

LEMA's keywords for Sustainability

1

Precious scraps

Every production scrap is collected and sent for recycling in collaboration with a technical partner. In one year, 7 tons of shavings are produced and recycled, partly as fuel for the biomass boiler, with an annual saving of 2.5 MWh and 373 tons of CO2, and partly as raw material for companies that produce new recycled chipboard panels. With the aim of giving life to new products, cardboard, steel, aluminum and all metal inserts are collected by LEMA and sent to specialized companies to be reused. Even the waste glass produced by the company is collected and sent to glassworks, where it is melted down to be reintroduced into the production cycle.
2

Pack with care

LEMA aims to improve its environmental impact by carefully choosing materials dedicated to packaging. The cardboard used is recycled and all waste is sent to specialized paper mills for recovery. Part of the protective plastics are made with regenerated and recyclable materials, with the commitment in the coming years to replace materials that are not eco-friendly. LEMA is also committed to raising awareness among the end consumer, including clear instructions on the packaging on how to properly dispose of the packaging.

Objectives

1
2

The journey towards an increasingly sustainable future continues. LEMA has planned several initiatives and investments aimed at better controlling and reducing electricity consumption and CO2 emissions.
Currently, investments in ethical and economic terms have made it possible to work on the use of new materials that can contribute to the creation of a more sustainable circular economy system. In recent years, in fact, LEMA has introduced into its collection furniture made with materials that are totally recyclable at the end of their life, such as the Ombra chair by Piero Lissoni in the polypropylene version, a recyclable thermoplastic material. The Armadio al Centimetro collection has also taken a further step forward towards sustainability: the Tian wardrobe stands out for the CARB panel and for the structure in aluminum and glass, materials that, if properly disposed of, can be reused again.
Today LEMA is the perfect synthesis of tradition and innovation. Projected towards the future, the Italian company faces today’s challenges for the protection of the planet, applying its deep know-how to new technologies, to offer a product that combines aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability
